It happens all the time to my 1:1 clients and recently happened to one of you when a trademark copycat forced you to rethink going at it without the support of an expert.

Doing this research before you need it might seem pointless, but doing it now will save you stress when you are already in a heightened emotional state.

This week, your task is to spend 15 minutes researching what free or low-cost legal help might be available in your area. Here are a few resources to get you started:

• Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts: A nationwide network dedicated to helping creative businesses.
• State or Local Bar Associations: Many offer pro bono or low-cost legal clinics and events specifically for local entrepreneurs.
• Local SBA Centers: These centers often host workshops or one-on-one sessions to help small business owners navigate legal issues affordably.
• Law School Clinics: Check with nearby law schools—many have clinics where law students, supervised by experienced attorneys, offer free or low-cost legal assistance.

A key tip to remember: location matters.

Lawyers are licensed on a state-by-state basis because the law can vary depending on where you live. Yes, some legal matters like copyright or trademark issues fall under federal law. But things like contracts, LLC formation, and employment law are governed by your state’s regulations. This is why it’s crucial to find someone who understands your state’s laws inside and out—someone who can offer the exact right advice for your creative business.

Taking the time to explore these options now will save you time and money later, ensuring you have a trusted list of resources when you need them most.
