Where I write down every client disaster

Hi Reader,

In 2011, I passed the California Bar and waited four months for results. I knew I wanted to start my own practice, so I filled that time by having conversations with small business owners I knew.

During one of those conversations, a friend who ran a tattoo shop told me something I’ll never forget:

“Start a notebook where you record all the stupid shit you do that you don’t want to repeat.”

A few months later, after I passed the Bar, he handed me a Moleskine notebook. Inside the cover, he wrote: "Congrats! Here’s your own ‘Shit I’ll Never Do Again’ book. Fill it up."

Fourteen years and several notebooks later, I can tell you that advice has shaped almost everything about how I run my business.

  • It’s helped me see what client situations repeat, and how to stop them.
  • It’s helped me update my contract to reflect the reality of how I work, not just legal templates.
  • It’s helped me understand where I needed better boundaries and better language.

Because the real insight wasn’t just in the mistakes Reader. It was how I learned from them and put things in place to stop repeating them. Especially when emotions were high, timelines were tight, or expectations didn’t align.

That’s why I created Copy + Paste Legal Week, a free 5-day challenge to help you stop rewriting the same tricky client emails and start sending clear, confident responses that sound like you.

Each day, you’ll get:

  • A short, focused writing prompt
  • A ready-to-send script (adaptable to your voice)
  • Guidance to handle sticky client moments with clarity and calm

We start Monday, June 2. No fluff. No setup. Just five scripts you can use right away, to avoid writing the same emails over and over (and then regretting it later).

(When you click, you'll be taken to a blog post on dealing with difficult clients, but Kit is doing the magic behind the scenes to get you in.)

P.S. If you’ve got a friend who keeps texting you “What do I even say to this client?”, send them here. This challenge is made for them, too.
