Hi Reader! As I prep the Shield Your Studio workshops, there’s one consistent theme: Your clients/customers are hiring you because you are an expert. And if you can give them the tools and resources to be able to understand your plan, not only for getting them the outcome they want, but to handle any hiccups along the way, you are more likely to have a smooth working relationship. (Psst...If you need tools to help clients understand: how to pay on schedule, what’s needed to keep projects on track, what happens if things pivot or change, or what rights they have over your work, then we’ve got a workshop for you in Shield Your Studio. You can grab just the one you need for $39 or get a refresh of your contract by grabbing them all for $165.) And then it comes to hiccups, we all have a set of frequently asked questions that clients or customers commonly ask us. The most frequently asked question I get is, “What the heck is a J.D.?” When I started the artist’s J.D., I was a few years out of law school, and I assumed that everyone knew that a J.D. was the degree awarded at the end of law school. But I was wrong! In the first year or so of business, I debated changing the name because I wanted artists to understand that I was providing legal information. But as time went on, I decided that I liked the ambiguity and the fact that it didn’t immediately scream lawyer to creatives. So I stuck with it. Since we know that these FAQs exist. Sometimes we make our lives harder by not putting the answers to these questions in an easy-to-find place. This could be:
👉 Your action item: Write down the answers to your most FAQ and post them in an easy-to-find place. This will help “pre-answer” the question people are thinking, but not asking you. And if they do ask, you’ve got a place you can point them to for the answer! Did you complete this task? Come share your thoughts about FAQs on LinkedIn or Facebook. I'm not sitting at my computer this morning because I'm off playing pickleball in prep for an upcoming tournament. But hit reply if you run into any roadblocks in completing this week's task or have any questions/comments/thoughts, and I'll get back to you ASAP. Chat soon,
P.S. If you are feeling like what’s happening in the world is heavy and confusing, you aren’t alone. This year has been a lot. Which is why I was thrilled when a friend introduced me to Kaitlin Curtice’s work. I’m absolutely loving her book, Living Resistance. Go to your public library and check it out. Go to your local bookstore and support them by buying a copy. Supporting these places is a vote for knowledge, community, and curiosity. ❤️ Easy to understand legal resources should be available to every creative, regardless of their financial situation. If one of my resources has helped you and you would like to say “thank you”, you can make a contribution here. ❤️ |
