🦅 “This shouldn’t require another email; it’s already in the contract.” + your weekly roundup

Hi Reader!

Last week, I had a consult with a new law firm client to help her update her contract. One of my typical questions for these consults is to ask, “What’s not working about your contract?” And her answer was, “I have to keep explaining things to clients that are already written in the contract.”

This can be a common problem. That you think, “This shouldn’t require another email; it’s already in the contract.”

Usually the problem is one of two things:

  • it’s buried in the legalese, and the clients aren’t finding it quickly
  • clients are looking for it in one section, and your contract explains it in another

This is part of the reason I’m such a huge fan of a contract cover page. Because all those important details your clients care about are right up front and center for them to find.

The reality is this client didn’t need a whole new contract. What she mostly needed was some re-formatting to put those critical details in a place where clients could find them.

So my question to you is, what’s one question your contract should automatically answer, but doesn’t seem to? That’s your challenge to fix this week.

👉 Your action item

Identify one question you’ve gotten at least twice in the past month that you thought your contract already covered. Make a small tweak to your contract, the email you send with your contract, or other onboarding materials to highlight the answer to this question.

If you've ever thought, "Didn't we already talk about this?" there's a good chance the issue isn't the client. It might be the amount of communication your contract is creating instead of preventing.
