🦅 Too busy to read the contract + most important sections to check

Hi Reader!

One of my favorite parts of RV life is the regular, but unplanned meet-ups I have with a handful of people. Recently, on my way north, I ran into a creative I often bump into each spring.

When catching up, she admitted that because it was a busy travel day, she had signed a contract assuming it matched their prior conversations, because she didn’t have the energy to review it fully.

I assured her that she wasn’t the first creative to do this.

I also shared one of my tricks when I need to quickly scan a contract is the search or find tool. It lets me deliberately check the most important sections of the contract to make sure they align with prior conversations. (I share another trick in this week's video.)

👉 Your action item

Test this out with a contract you need to review this week, and let me know how it goes.

If you only have 20 minutes this week, the task above is the most important thing to do. But if you have a little more time, keep reading.

The clause to notice

One small section of a contract that can have an outsized impact later.

This week’s pattern: 100% comprehension isn’t the goal

You don’t need 100% comprehension of a contract to know if signing is (or isn’t) a good decision.

Instead, you need to confirm that the contract aligns with your prior conversations. (Because if they don’t align, the Integration clause will mean that your prior conversations aren’t relevant.)

This means the most important clauses to check are those that impact:

  • how you get paid
  • how much work are you committing to
  • who owns the work
  • how the relationship can end

Letting go of “I must understand all of this” makes it easier to focus on what actually deserves your attention and get back to everything else on your to-do list.
